With Pains, Comes Gains: Here’s Why You Should Add CBD To Your Workout Regimen, Today.

Whether you’re a pro athlete or an average guy / girl just trying to keep up with a healthy lifestyle, there are myriad perks to doing so. While it makes you feel great — looking at you endorphins — there are a lot of not-so-ideal results that can ensue post workout.

For anyone who has left the gym feeling like a warrior, only to wake up the next morning hunched over like an old person, you know what we mean. Between soreness and common post-workout woes, the struggle is real. 

So, what are you to do to combat this? Sure there are supplements, protein shakes, etc. to help out pre-workout, but do you really want to continue adding to the list? Today, we’re presenting you with a one-stop-shop powerhouse that will become your BFF to take before working out. 

That powerhouse is CBD.

First, let’s cover what CBD is, for any of you who are unfamiliar. 

CBD is sourced from the cannabis plant. You may be thinking: “Oh, so I’m going to get high?” No. This is one very large misconception surrounding the substance. CBD is not THC. The two are structurally different - yay, chemistry - and therefore have different effects on your body. Where THC will activate CB1 receptors in your brain, leading to the feeling of being high, CBD activates CB2 receptors throughout the body and creates a more long-term feeling of ease. Key takeaway here? CBD is non-intoxicating, so worry not about being stoned at the gym. 

Okay, now that we’ve laid out the foundation about this little miracle child, let’s get to the heart of it: why it works for your workout. There are 3 main reasons it is slowly proving to be a terrific component of an active lifestyle, and we break them down for you below. 


Stop 1: The Cortisol Machine

Ah, cortisol. You’ve likely heard about this hormone throughout your life, thanks to cleverly marketed drugs targeting blood pressure. It is considered the “stress hormone”, because it increases in production when the body is under, well, stress. The result of this hormone acting up is an increased heart rate, and blood pressure, among other things. 

So, how do cortisol and CBD have anything to do with one another? Glad you asked. First, it’s important to know that when you work out, cortisol levels skyrocket, thanks to the adrenal gland signaling to the body that it is under stress (working out is physically stressful, after all). The side effect of cortisol levels rising are as follows: lower bone density and prevention of muscle mass growth. While normally these things won’t matter, when you’re at the gym trying to do exactly opposite of those two things, it can be frustrating to feel like your hard work is going nowhere thanks to cortisol. 


Have no fear, this is where CBD comes in. It has been shown to decrease the anxiety response within the body, leading you to feel way more calm and at ease. This means, that it works against the response of cortisol within the body. It basically balances things out so that cortisol is at a happy equilibrium inside of you. Once CBD works to maintain cortisol, you’ll be able to optimize your workout results accordingly.

Stop 2: The Inflammation Station

Next up is the less-than-ideal issue of soreness. Yes, working out and feeling sore afterwards is a key indicator that you’re working new muscle groups and getting stronger. So that’s a plus. But, do we necessarily want to feel those repercussions actively? Probably not.

For that, we have a solution via CBD intake. It has been proven in the treatment of pain. This works by way of the CB1 / CB2 receptors mentioned earlier. These receptors are part of a larger system in the body known as the endocannabinoid system. The ECS runs throughout the body and is tied to overall wellness. It does this by inhibiting the inflammation response within the body, and thereby easing up the tensions of a sore body post-workout.

The substance has been shown to quell occasional bouts of sleeplessness thanks to its potent effects on the body.  In one study, people who took 160 mg of CBD reported to have less interruptions during their slumber and stayed asleep for longer amounts of time. This is thought to have to do with the way CBD interacts with the two main chemicals within the brain responsible for sleep: 2AG and Anandamide.
