A Guide To The Major Superfoods (Plus, Ones With CBD) 

Unless you’ve joined Patrick Star living under a rock, you know that in recent years food bloggers have been touting the benefits of superfoods. These innately healthy ingredients are known for their role in increasing overall well-being. You may be surprised to learn, though, that most of these foods actually contain naturally-occurring CBD. So for us it seemed like a no-brainer when asked to team up with Simplified Superfoods for a sweepstakes and build out a parfait recipe that hits all the super-foodie and CBD-approved stops.

Ingredient Stop 1: Organic Chia Seeds 

Chia seeds are an undervalued wellness powerhouse. Sure, they may be smaller than poppy seeds, but they pack a punch that’s not to be messed with. We’d be remiss not to include them in our recipe. Here’s why: 

  1. Powerful source of fiber. Chia seeds contain 11 grams of fiber, which is almost 50% of the recommended daily value. 

  2. Protein Power. That’s right, these seeds have protein, which make them the perfect addition to any carnivore’s or vegan’s diet. 

  3. Bone Help. One of the other benefits of chia seeds is its long list of bone-supporting nutrients like potassium, calcium, and magnesium. Power up and get strong.

Ingredient Stop 2: Organic Hemp Hearts 

Hemp hearts are sourced from the cannabis plant, but like CBD, no, they don’t get you intoxicated. However, they certainly give your body some pretty amazing benefits, and that’s something worth noting. Let’s go over what those are. 

  1. Heart Support. Hemp hearts may be able to reduce your risk of heart disease. Thanks to the presence of arginine and gamma-linoeic acid which are two nutrients linked to reducing inflammation within the body. 

  2. Skin Goals. Aside from heart support, hemp hearts also have a healthy amount of fatty acids, like omega-3 and omega-6. What’s more, these two come in a 3:1 ratio which is considered by nutritionists the optimal range. If you’re not familiar with fatty acids, let us get you in the loop. Fatty acids play a major role in keeping the skin’s oil barrier strong. So, when it’s supported, the result is plump, hydrated skin.

Ingredient Stop 3: Flax Seeds 

Next up in our parfait ingredient line-up are flax seeds. We’re positive that you’ve heard about these oblong-looking seeds that are usually thrown in green smoothies or the like. But, today, you can get up close and personal with their individual benefits for your bod. 

  1. Flax Contains CBD. Yes, you read that right. Are they now your favorite seed on our list? It’s okay, they sort of are ours, too. The flax plant, like the cannabis plant, has compounds that are very similar to the cannabinoid cannabidiol (CBD) we know and love. As a result, researchers are now looking into its medicinal properties.

  2. Low Carb/High Fiber. If you’re looking for a one-stop-shop to get healthy carbohydrates while fulfilling your fiber intake, look no further. A mere 2 tablespoons of flax seeds will give you 20 to 25 percent of your recommend DV.

Ingredient Stop 4: Grass-Fed Collagen 

Sure, we’ve seen the creams all over and heard about how collagen can be “the” anti-aging miracle, but did you know that aside from the beauty world, collagen is a perfectly good ingredient for daily consumption? Well, you’re about to find out why below.

  1. Restores and Renews Skin. Collagen is an essential protein, and plays a large role in skin elasticity. As we age, our collagen production starts to decrease which gives way to fine lines and wrinkles. By taking collagen, you are able to help supplement this loss, and as a result, promote more youthful looking skin. In one study, 46 women aged 35 to 55 were given a collagen supplement. The result? Improved skin elasticity after 4 weeks of daily consumption.
